1997 – 2002
Owner/GM/Assistant Engineer of Galapagos Recording Studios in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Galapagos Recording Studios was conceived as a mid size facility
As one of the owners, I was in charge of overseeing the construction of our building from the ground up, interior design, acoustic development , equipment research, acquisition, installation and maintenance.
I hired two lead engineers and I became their Assistant Engineer. This gave me invaluable experience in music production, studio logistics and my favorite, microphone techniques.
We built a solid reputation thanks to great staff and service. Even when we had 2 major studios within walking distance from ours, musicians would compliment us by saying “we could have gone there but we like your vibe better”
Our facility offered two bathrooms with showers, a kitchen, an office/warehouse for musicians, a playroom complete with ping pong table, sitting area, TV and lots of natural light. A loft designated as sleeping quarters with access to a terrace with a gril
2001-2008
In 2001, Argentina suffered an economic collapse and business was bad for almost two years. During the empty days in 2001 my right hand engineer and I decided to re design the acoustics of the rooms and did a complete overhaul of the control room, rewired gear, did maintenance on our mixing console and significantly improved the overall quality of the studio. With a new studio, we spent almost a year working on a few projects, lots of free recordings to promote our new setup but in 2002 family circumstances forced me to come back to The United States, leaving Galapagos in the hands of our engineers
By 2003 the economy stabilized and business picked up again. Unable to return to Argentina, my business partner decided to take over. With the new economic model, there was a renewed desire for making things happen, at every level. In our case, bands wanted to make albums again and Galapagos was ready for the best market in its history. Legendary local artists recorded albums with us, Nike Argentina filmed a tv commercial in our playroom, Sony Music
Argentina and Warner Music had bands recording at Galapagos. Galapagos was booked 3 to 5 months in advance and it was a success. In 2008 the same family issues that had brought me back to The United States, forced us to close the doors for good.
1992-1997
Owner/GM of Hangar 18 rehearsal studios in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Start-up effort required demolition/construction, acoustic design, equipment acquisition, maintenance and operation, outfitting the existing building and developing/maintaining clientele through marketing and customer service. It was a modest room, with quality gear from Yamaha, Peavey, Shure, Marshall and Premier. It was air conditioned and clean. Honesty and integrity combined with promotional rates, incentives and great PR made reservations grow to the point the room was full from 10am to 12pm, 6 days a week.
In 1997, I was ready to open a second room but my friend and guitar player suggested building a recording studio instead. With my mom’s help (she owned the property in question), I partnered up with him and a second demolition job started. Soon, another friend of mine liked the idea and joined our venture. We leveled two horizontal properties and a garage.Construction of a 6,000sq.ft. two story commercial studio started.
